Communication Guide
Practice Active Listening
Truly listen to understand, not just to reply. Pay attention to both verbal and non-verbal cues (if applicable). Reflect back what you hear to ensure understanding, e.g., 'So, if I understand correctly, you're saying...'
Communicate Your Needs Clearly and Kindly
Don't expect others to read your mind. Express your feelings and needs respectfully using 'I' statements, e.g., 'I feel [emotion] when [situation] because [reason]. I would appreciate it if [request].'
Be Mindful of Timing and Tone
Choose appropriate times for important conversations. Be aware of your tone, especially in text-based communication where nuances can be lost. Emojis can sometimes help convey tone, but use them thoughtfully.
Embrace Healthy Conflict Resolution
Disagreements are normal. Focus on the issue, not on attacking the person. Seek compromise and understanding. It's okay to agree to disagree on some things, but crucial to resolve core conflicts respectfully.
Ask Open-Ended Questions
Encourage deeper conversation by asking questions that require more than a simple 'yes' or 'no' answer. Questions starting with 'What,' 'How,' 'Why,' or 'Tell me more about...' can be very effective.
Reflect on your own communication style: Do you tend to avoid tough conversations? How can you improve your active listening skills?
